Simplicity or Complexity – What are you Watch-ing?

Time is what makes watchesworthwhile. The significance of timekeeping alone inspires the watchmaking industry to produce mechanically perfect, precision oriented watches. Indeed, it’s the science of horology which puts time in timepieces but it’s the art of designing which makes time watching a pleasant exercise. Watch designing is as pivotal as watch movement or accuracy because it provides means to showcase time as aesthetically as desired. The different engineering and artistic aspects of horology support each other inevitably and the nature of relationship between these is that of a human body with personality. As the design defines the watch structure, the ideas behind those designs and the brains behind those ideas function constantly out of the box to create innovative watches with simple or complex outlook.

Today, in this age of fashion and trends, it is not very easy for the watch makers to match the demands of people with fast changing tastes and requirements. However, appearance-wise well understated and simplistic or detailed and complex watches are manufactured to fulfill those demands. As a general principal, the appearance of any watch invariably depends upon; firstly, the horological features and functions it carries; secondly, who it is aimed for? Therefore, the two genres of watches attract different types of people depending upon their class, age group, personality traits and personal preferences.

The golden rule ‘keep it simple’ even comes to the rescue in a richly complicated and puzzling watch manufacturing trade as well, for the primary objective of a timepiece is nothing else but to tell time after all. But simple by no means imply cheap or ordinary because a simple gold watch with few diamonds on the bezel few more inside the dial for hour markers is indeed a pricey instrument. The easy going time telling devices with a small date box at best are ardently loved by such men and women who don’t want to feel like carrying the world around on their wrist and don’t like to expect much from their watches. This is why the soft styled and elegantly classical watches are still in business.

In the light of the above its can be said that, there are two types of people in the world, those who like simple watches and those who don’t. So, those who don’t, they don’t because they don’t mind something extra. With the advancement of computerization and technology in all domains of modern horology including engineering, designing and architecture, the development of high functional time devices with countless features and utilities is just like a walk in the park for the leading watch brands. Thus, for the info-tech generation of the 21st century, watches – chronographs or otherwise with dedicated movements, turning bezels with tachometers, perpetual calendars, end of battery life indicators (EOL), transparent case backs and a galore of exclusive features displayed through various semi-circles, arcs, sub-dials and additional hands is the only answer. Then, there are sports watches specially crafted to accommodate the free spirited adventure seekers or the exuberance of football, motor racing, golf or water sports fans. In all honesty, these watches are so plethoric and complicated that they can easily drive a naïve person crazy.

With the wide variety of different simple and complex watches available, choosing a watch can be very hectic. However, in the end it’s just a matter of personal choice so, just choose the watch you can keep watching tiresomely.
